Acne: What’s it about ?
Acne is one of the most common of all
skin problems. It affects most teenagers to some degree and even more
adults. Acne shows up as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and deep painful
bumps that look like boils. Acne most commonly occurs on the face but can
also appear on the back, chest, shoulders and neck. It is estimated that
as many as 80% of people between 12 and 25 years of age suffer from acne.
While in most people, acne clears up after few years, many suffer from
permanent scarring of the skin.. Even when there are few physical marks
left, the emotional ones can be devastating.
What Causes acne ?
Rising male-type hormone levels, found
in both males and females, during puberty cause the
sebaceous (oil) glands of the skin to
get bigger. The sebaceous glands make sebum which reaches the surface of
the skin by traveling through the hair follicle. The lining of the wall of
the hair follicle sheds skin cells, which then stick together with the
sebum, plugging up the opening of the follicles. Also, the mixture of oil
and cells helps bacteria in the follicle grow and become virulent, causing
the wall of the follicle to break. When the wall is broken, sebum,
bacteria and shed skin cells escape into the tissues causing pimples and
large bumps.
Many factors contribute to the
severity and duration of acne. Food such as chocolate, fried food, cola
and coffee, though it was not proven, might have a negative effect on
acne. More over, stress, hot and humid weather, certain medications and
hormonal changes can contribute to the acne problem.
What kind of acne do I have?
Acne consists of whiteheads,
blackheads, pimples, pustules and nodules. It can be one or more of 4
grades: Grade I, which is mild and consists of whiteheads and blackheads.
Grades II and III are considered moderate and consist of pimples and few
pustules. Grade IV is quite severe and consists of pustules and large
nodules.
